  1. Our method

We re-reviewed every tool, from scratch

We scored all 19 tools again against one written method: seven criteria, each from 0 to 5 in half points. Every fact was checked in the vendor's documentation and on its pricing and privacy pages. Privacy claims got the closest look: we read what each tool's documentation says about cookies and identifiers. Several scores went down as a result, including WireBoard's, which we make. Smartlook, which is being retired, keeps its review but is no longer ranked, so the ranking lists 18 tools.

  2. Free plans

Umami and Crazy Egg widen their free plans

Umami's free cloud plan now includes funnels, user journeys, retention and cohorts. Crazy Egg added a free plan with traffic analytics and heatmaps; its recordings still start at $29 a month, billed yearly.

  3. Acquired

Hotjar sign-ups now go to Contentsquare

Contentsquare, which bought Hotjar in 2021, has folded it in. hotjar.com now leads to a page headed "Hotjar is now Contentsquare", and new Hotjar accounts can no longer be created. Hotjar's heatmaps, recordings and surveys live on in Contentsquare's plans, including a free one, and our Hotjar review now covers those.

  4. New feature

    Umami adds heatmaps

Umami added heatmaps in June 2026, two months after session replays. On Umami's cloud, both need the Business plan.

  5. Retiring

Smartlook stops selling and will shut down

Cisco, which owns Smartlook, stopped selling new subscriptions on 31 May 2026 and stopped renewals on 31 August 2026. Support ends on 31 August 2027, and on 30 September 2027 the platform is switched off and all remaining data deleted. We no longer rank Smartlook, and its review lists the alternatives.

  6. New feature

Umami adds boards and session replays

Boards let you lay out your own dashboards from 15 components and mix several websites in one. Session replays arrived the same month; on Umami's cloud they need the Business plan.

  7. Renamed

    Dealfront becomes Leadfeeder again

The B2B platform sold as Dealfront took back its original name, Leadfeeder, on 24 March 2026, and dealfront.com now leads to leadfeeder.com. The company behind it is still Dealfront Group GmbH, in Karlsruhe, Germany. The visitor feed that used to be called Leadfeeder is now named Web Visitors.
